The fact that scrap is not reacting as strongly as one might have expected to the stimulus of higher prices suggests those higher prices are more sustainable and price growth is easier," says Philip Klapwijk, executive chairman of respected metals analytics firm GFMS Ltd, a unit of Thomson Reuters.
Gold prices breached $1,800 an ounce for the first time this week, having almost tripled from its 2008 lows of $680.
"The easier-to-let-go stuff has been let go, so it gets progressively more difficult given the move in the price to stimulate the same growth in scrap," Klapwijk said.
In 2009, scrap supply surged by 30 percent to a record as consumers rushed to sell anything they had, both to turn a fast buck on a booming market and to cushion the blow of recession.
In the years since then, large amounts of recycled gold flooded the physical market. But growth has slowed sharply as people either run out of things to sell, or wait for higher prices. Klapwijk expects recycled gold to grow by only about 5 percent this year.

Gunner Kiel

Kiel has the size you want in a QB, and can also move and plays with his feet. He's not necessarily a dual threat, but is a tough, effective runner and can buy time with his mobility. He is very accurate, sees the field well and makes excellent decisions. He can make the throws and get the ball into traffic. His arm strength is good, but improvement can still be made to push it to elite. Is smart and a good leader as well.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Kiel chose Indiana over his other finalist Alabama, and a slew of offers from many of the nation's top programs including Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Tennessee and USC.

"It was just the best fit for me," Kiel said a few hours before making his decision on a trip to Indiana with his parents. "I woke up having that gut feeling and felt really good about it and my parents were excited about it too."

As a junior, Kiel threw for nearly 2,700 yards and 36 touchdowns while rushing for another 600 yards and eight scores. Ranked by 247Sports as the nation's 10th overall prospect, he plans to graduate from high school a semester early to enroll on campus in January, just days after he caps his prep career as an Under Armour All-American.

Kiel is the 13th commit in Indiana's class of 2012, as Wilson and his staff continue to impress. In less than a full year on the job, they've accomplished something previous Indiana coaches haven't: Get the state's top prospects to play in Bloomington. Prior to Kiel's pledge, Wilson locked up commitments from Kevin Davis, the state's top linebacker, and Jordan Wallace, the state's top receiver.

His track record has a lot to do with it. Wilson mentored players including Zac Kustok, a Unitas Award finalist at Northwestern, and Sam Bradford, the former Heisman Trophy winner and current starter for the St. Louis Rams. From Kiel's perspective, it was simply another reason to believe in his tutelage.

"It's definitely special seeing his background and all the guys he's coached," said Kiel. "It's special to have a chance to be part of that."

One thing's for certain. Kiel's commitment has solidified Jul. 27 as a very special day for Indiana football.

Kiel was the No. 2 overall quarterback in the 2012 class for the National Football Post and his arm has been praised as elite by everyone from ESPN to every known scouting service. He threw for 36 touchdowns last season to go with over 2,600 yards and this season should bring even more accolades as he’s now clearly on the national radar.

Mr. Bean actor Rowan Atkinson injured in car crash

Rowan Atkinson, the actor most famous for his role as Mr Bean, suffered a shoulder injury when his McLaren F1 caught fire after striking a tree and lamp post in Cambridgeshire Thursday night.

Atkinson, 56, was able to get out of the car, and was waiting with a passing motorist, before firefighters arrived.

"One crew from Stanground, one crew from Dogsthorpe and a rescue vehicle from Dogsthorpe were called to a report of a car fire on the A605 near the Haddon services,

This was a fire affecting a Mclaren F1 which was caused by a single vehicle road traffic collision. The driver of the vehicle was out of the car before the arrival of firefighter.

Atkinson was given a breath test which was negative.

His agent Peter Bennett-Jones said the actor had been on his way to his home in Northamptonshire after working on his film Johnny English Reborn, and suffered a painful shoulder injury.

”I think he was in pain and had some painkillers and stayed in hospital because obviously he didn’t have a car to get home. It is nothing more serious than that.

”I spoke to the hospital and they said he was kept in overnight in observation and his shoulder was in pain.

”I have no idea if the car has been written off. It’s been removed and I’m sure he won’t want it to be written off.

”It has been taken back to his home and I’m sure he will want to get it repaired straight away."

Atkinson purchased the maroon McLaren F1 in 1997 to celebrate the success of his Mr Bean film. It is believed that he paid £650,000 for it.

French nuclear test victims

In the year since France introduced legislation to compensate people suffering health-effects from the country's nuclear tests, Paris has only paid out one claimant. Yet veterans groups deny that time is against them.

France conducted 210 nuclear tests between 1960 and 1996 that exposed a total of 150,000 military personnel and civilians to high levels of radiation. Now the so-called "Veterans of Nuclear Testing" are up in arms over the poor treatment they have received.

In June 2010, Herve Morin, who was defense minister at the time, promised generous compensation for the people suffering health problems resulting from exposure to nuclear tests, which were conducted first in the former colony of Algeria and then in the overseas Department of French Polynesia.
Several thousand victims, mainly members of the military, joined the group AVEN, while local civilians formed the group "Moruroa e tatou" or "Moruroa and us" to lobby for their rights and show that the health consequences resulting from the tests were more serious than Paris let on.

The law also calls for each case to be recognized by a special state commission before compensation is paid.

First – and only – payment made

The first notification of payment was made in June 2011. The state commission approved several thousand euros compensation for a former conscript who was ordered to watch the detonation of France's first nuclear bomb in the Sahara Desert in 1960 from just a few kilometers away.

Public awareness:

While saying that the law has no teeth, Gille added that it had at least forced the public to confront the topic of those suffering from the effects of the nuclear tests.

"The public has agreed that the victims deserve compensation," he said. "But the compensation system doesn't work."

Jean-Paul Teissonniere, a lawyer who represents many of the victims, said he intends to appeal every case that the state commission rejects.

Long-term observation:

AVEN wants to observe the health of people involved in the tests as well as those who lived and continue to live near the test sites.

"So far there are no investigations into the long-term effects of radiation, not even among the personnel of nuclear facilities," Sans said.

Maybe the government thinks the compensation problem will solve itself over time as victims die, but now the children of veterans are active in our organization and they will continue to fight for the rights of their deceased parents.
